Joey Qualls, Band Director
Joey Qualls is the Head Band Director at McAnally Middle School, a role he has held since the school opened in the Fall of 2022. Before joining McAnally, he served as the Band Director at Aledo Middle School from 2014 to 2022, and has been a band director within Aledo ISD since 2005. His previous positions include Assistant Band Director at both Aledo High School and Aledo Middle School, as well as serving as Aledo’s Percussion Specialist for five years and Director of Percussion for one year.
At McAnally Middle School, Mr. Qualls teaches the Honors Band, as well as Beginner Horn, Trombone, and Flute, and assists with the Symphonic Band. His bands have consistently achieved UIL Sweepstakes ratings, unanimous first division ratings, and “Best in Class” honors at various area festivals. Notably, his bands have been recognized as “National Winners” in the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors Project, advanced to the CCC State Honor Band Finals twice, and were featured at the 75th Annual Midwest Clinic and Concert. Most recently, the McAnally MS Honors Band placed 2nd overall as a State Finalist in the 2024 TMEA 2C Honor Band Contest.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Qualls is an active clinician for area bands, has adjudicated UIL/TMEA events, and has guest conducted at the University of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Summer Band Camp. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Percussive Arts Society, and Phi Beta Mu-Alpha Chapter.
Mr. Qualls feels privileged to teach in Aledo and attributes his success to his faith, as well as the numerous mentors, band directors, and teachers who have shaped his career. When not at the band hall, he enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, daughter Hayleigh, and their two dogs, Jake and Molly.
